Which Airport is Closer?
There are several considerations to weigh into the decision. I have listed several here:
Distance
San Jose Airport is only 12.6 miles from Sofia University, so it is much
closer. Even in the worst of traffic, it is easier to access than San
Francisco, which is almost 23 miles away.
Traffic and Public Transit
I would strongly recommend
San Jose over SFO, especially for mid week. It is just easier. You
only have to get one train to get to Palo Alto, but you would need 2 for
SFO.
Ground Transport
As for advantages, the cost of rental cars is slightly less in San
Jose. You can click here for a list of rentals. I have used Fox in the
past and was
very pleased with them.
However, this depends on the type of car you prefer. The larger
cars in San Francisco are cheaper. Here is a link to see this list.
Both use the same freeway to get to Palo Alto. By far, San Jose is
cheaper for hotel rates, so that might be a consideration too.
Fog
All those beautiful pictures of the Golden Gate Bridge appearing to float in the clouds come with a heavy price! SFO has a horrible reputation for cancellations or delays due to fog that Mineta San Jose does not.
